Can’t you feel how simple life is ?

******

She walked for hours through the city that morning ; she had not come back for such a long time and she wanted to see whether things were still where she had left them. Like a young Japanese she went to Fontana di Trevi and Piazza di Spagna, in Via Condotti she entered the most expensive luxury shops so that she might be treated courteously by the shop assistants. They showed her boots worth millions and a watch which cost as much as a small house and she put it on her wrist to see whether it would tell the time of happiness, but it only showed the passing of time. An Arab who spoke ten languages had given her an even more precious watch, a jewel containing time inside and one day he took it back because business was turning out badly and love had come to an end. Now Margherita no longer wears a watch ; at the age of 33, the hands of the clock are whirling round so fast and her life which used to be an ocean is now a wash-basin. In her hairbrush this morning she found a grey thread of melancholy. She had walked so much through the streets in the centre and then she found herself beyond, there where the tourists never go and where things are so simple that they hurt. Along Nomentana many plane-trees had been cut down and the street seemed to her a place deprived of shelter, even from a distance, you can see who is alone and walking aimlessly. Then Margherita turned into Villa Paganini out into Via delle Alpi and down to the perfect circle of Piazza Caprera. From there you can see the white back of Liceo Giulio Cesare which she attended when she was a girl and had still everything to learn. Margherita was only interested in love, Catullus and Dante, but above all Mirko who had hair falling to his shoulders, spring-like eyes, who walked about like an artist and made splendid crazy speeches. For Margherita, he wrote songs which were difficult to sing without any rhyme or chorus, a mule track of notes and strange words which made her feel almost uncomfortable. Margherita still remembers a verse : « You’re the queen and you’re the rust, you’re the princess and the principle of the end ». After making love, he snuggled up to her and started crying, or else he licked her fingers like a dog. He was fire and tears, a maelstrom which made Margherita feel important and left her with a sorrow similar to dirt…

Now Margherita has arrived on Piazza Caprera : under the small arches the students’bar is still there, it’s open, and Margherita sits down at a table. She lays her hands on the metal surface which seems to her as cool as water from a spring. Mirko had been her first love, a passionate love, then there were many others but they were all like him. They were extraordinary men who conquered her with bonfire words and impressive gestures…

    - A coffee and a glass of water – Margherita orders to the waiter who is little older than a child lost in a white jacket.

I liked to come here in the afternoon to read those novels in which everything is important and life is flaming up like a fire. I also liked the older boys from Giulio Cesare who came and interrupted me with their flirtatious remarks and their bolting motorbikes and who played the fools for me. They told me softly : you’re the prettiest, just give me a kiss and I’ll take you to the top of the world. Let me touch your breasts, make me happy and you’ll see what a dream life you’ll have. Now the evening is colouring the house fronts with a red hue and the heat seems to have dropped. In the middle of the piazza, a dog is roaming about with its coat eaten away by mange ; an old couple holding hands are slowly sliding away.

    - Here is your coffee, Madam.

Nobody had ever called her this before, this word is a stone rolling forever on her heart. It’s strange, though, she thought it would have been heavier, more painful. Things are changing and their names are also changing, they are becoming more simple, they are no longer trembling with fear.
