Le Mahatma Gandhi, la « grande âme », est le père de la nation indienne, ‘bapu’ (père) comme le surnomment les Indiens. Il prêche la tolérance, la ahinsa अहिंसा (non-violence) et le satyāgrah सत्याग्रह (la force de la vérité, la résistance passive). Il a consacré sa vie à combattre le mensonge et à rechercher la vérité (satya).

Gandhi a été très influencé par les idées du grand écrivain russe Léon Tolstoï dont les idéaux étaient la vérité et l’amour de l’humanité: il écrivit dans sa dernière lettre à Gandhi: « La loi de l'amour est la loi supérieure, unique de la vie humaine » ; « sans la loi de l'amour il ne pouvait y avoir que celle de la violence, c'est-à-dire du droit du plus fort »

La vraie ahinsa doit libérer l’homme de la mauvaise volonté, de la colère et de la haine. Gandhi a écrit: « Il y a beaucoup de causes pour lesquelles je suis prêt à mourir mais aucune cause pour laquelle je suis prêt à tuer. » « Œil pour œil et le monde finira aveugle. »

La tolérance. Gandhi croyait que le cœur de toutes les religions était la vérité et l’amour.

In this troubled period, we need some peace. Let us remember Gandhi who was a man of peace.

He dedicated his life to fighting lies and seeking the truth (satya).

Gandhi was profoundly influenced by the ideas of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy whose ideals were the truth and love for mankind: in his last letter to Gandhi, he wrote: « The law of love is the supreme law, the unique law of human life… without it, there could only be the law of violence, that is the right of the mightiest.»

The true ahinsa means freeing man from ill will, anger and hatred. Gandhi wrote:

« There are many causes for which I am ready to die for but no cause for which I am ready to kill.» « An eye for an eye… and the world will end up blind.»

Tolerance. Gandhi believed that at the heart of all religions there was truth and love.

A Hindu ? « Yes I am. I am also a Christian, a Muslim, a Buddhist and a Jew.»
